Dennis van der Geest

Dennis van der Geest was one of the Netherlands’ leading heavyweights during the late 1990s and 2000s. Powerful, athletic and charismatic, he combined competitive success with a larger-than-life personality that later made him a familiar face beyond the tatami.

His greatest individual achievement came in 2005 when he became World Champion. It crowned a period of remarkable consistency in which he collected five World Championship medals between 1997 and 2005. On the Olympic stage he secured bronze at the Athens 2004 Games, confirming his status among the elite of his era.

Van der Geest was also a dominant force in Europe. He won European titles in 2000 and 2002 and stood on the continental podium ten times in total. One of his proudest moments was helping the Netherlands win the European team title, winning all his bouts by ippon and delivering decisive points.

On the international circuit he captured 11 World Cup gold medals, including victory at the prestigious Tournoi de Paris in 1999. He also claimed gold at the Dutch Open in Rotterdam.

Nicknamed Woeste Willem, he trained with KenAmJu under coaches including Cor van der Geest, Herman Debrot, Ronald Joorse and Louis Wijdenbosch. After retiring in 2008, he became a successful entertainer, DJ and television presenter, while remaining involved in the sport as a commentator and analyst for JudoTV.
