Team Conny & Peter: the quiet patrons
In modern judo, most sponsorship structures come from national federations or large commercial partners. In Germany, however, a unique and rather discreet initiative has emerged through two passionate supporters known simply as Conny & Peter.
Peter Widmann, founder of the German online brand Erdbeermund, gradually became a notable patron within the judo world. What started with support for the German men’s national team expanded to backing several clubs in the 1. Judo-Bundesliga. One of the key teams benefiting from this support is KSV Esslingen, a club that managed to win the Bundesliga final with the help of a strong international line-up supported by the couple.
Over the years, Conny and Peter have built an informal international network of elite athletes competing in Germany. Georgian stars such as Varlam Liparteliani, Lasha Shavdatuashvili, Vazha Margvelashvili, Beka Gviniashvili, Guram Tushishvili and current world champion Tato Grigalashvili have all been part of the group. Azerbaijani judoka Orkhan Safarov, German Dimitri Peters and Dutch athletes Frank de Wit, Noël van ’t End, Michael Korrel and Jur Spijkers have also enjoyed their support among many others.
The couple’s business background includes luxury Hublot watches and ventures in lingerie and online gifts. Their concept focuses on supporting individual athletes with financial backing, travel opportunities and invitations to private gatherings, often on Ibiza.
Despite the presence of world-class athletes, the project appears driven less by commercial interest than by personal enthusiasm. Conny and Peter prefer to stay out of the spotlight, quietly enjoying the friendships and the international judo community that has formed around them.
