Angelique Seriese
Angélique Seriese was one of the dominant forces in women’s heavyweight judo at the end of the 1980s and throughout the 1990s. Representing the Netherlands, she combined strength, mobility and tactical intelligence to become one of her country’s most decorated athletes.
Her greatest achievement came at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, where women’s judo featured as a demonstration sport. Seriese claimed the gold medal, earning her place among the select group of Dutch Olympic judo champions. She later confirmed her lasting quality by becoming World Champion in 1995. Across her career she collected three World Championship medals, proving her consistency against the world’s best.
On the European stage she was almost unbeatable. Seriese won an extraordinary eight European titles, competing successfully in both the heavyweight and open categories. Her ability to adapt across divisions underlined her technical depth and competitive resilience.
She also enjoyed success on the international circuit, winning the Tournoi de Paris in 1989 and 1994 and claiming four titles at the German Open World Masters. Coached by the respected Chris de Korte, Seriese became one of the pillars of Dutch women’s judo and remains one of the four Olympic champions in the nation’s history.
