Mika Sugimoto: Japan’s heavyweight world champion
Mika Sugimoto was one of Japan’s leading heavyweight judoka in the early 2010s, known for her powerful style and consistency on the world stage. Competing in the +78kg category, she reached the pinnacle of her career by becoming World Champion in Tokyo in 2010, a victory that confirmed her status among the best heavyweights of her generation.
Sugimoto continued her strong performances with a bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships in Paris and had already shown her potential earlier by winning bronze at the World Open Championships in 2008. Her success was not limited to world events, as she also captured gold at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, adding another prestigious title to her impressive record.
Her biggest Olympic achievement came at the London 2012 Games, where she reached the final and secured the silver medal. That same year she also climbed to the number one position on the IJF World Ranking in the heavyweight division, highlighting her dominance during that period.
