Huseyin Ozkan

Hüseyin Özkan is one of Türkiye’s most celebrated judoka, remembered above all for his Olympic triumph at the Sydney 2000 Games. Competing in the lightweight division, he delivered a historic gold medal that placed Turkish judo firmly on the global map.

Born in Chechnya as Khasei Bisultanov, Özkan later represented Türkiye and quickly became a leading figure on the international circuit. In 1999 he reached the final of the World Championships, confirming his status among the world’s elite. Two years earlier he had claimed the European title in 1997, a breakthrough moment in his rise to prominence.

Throughout his career, Özkan was known for his fierce competitive spirit and for his memorable battles with France’s Larbi Benboudaoud, contests that became classics of their era. He also enjoyed success at major international events, including victories at the German Open World Masters in 1996 and 1998. In 2004 he added Balkan Championship gold in Bucharest.

After retiring from competition, Özkan continued to shape Turkish judo as national head coach. Today he works with emerging Olympic talent at his club in Kocaeli, passing on his experience and discipline to the next generation.

Hüseyin Özkan’s is the only Olympic gold medallist for Türkiye and was a top coach for years contribution to the growth of judo in Türkiye.
