Mark Huizinga
Mark Huizinga is one of the most successful Dutch judoka in history and a fighter who stayed relevant at the highest level for more than a decade. His greatest triumph came at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, where he captured gold in the under 90kg division. Across his career he collected three Olympic medals and represented the Netherlands at four consecutive Olympic Games between 1996 and 2008.
Huizinga was also a dominant force in Europe, winning the European title five times and regularly standing on major podiums around the world. Outside the Olympic spotlight he built an impressive list of achievements including eight Military World titles. Even after retiring from elite competition he continued to compete, adding the Veteran World title in 2015.
The Dutch champion trained under the guidance of the late coach Chris de Korte, who played a major role in shaping his career. Huizinga often cited Japanese legend Toshihiko Koga as one of the athletes he admired most.
One of his notable tournament victories came at the German Open World Masters in 1999, a prestigious event during that era. His contribution to the sport was later recognised when he was inducted into the IJF Hall of Fame in 2018.
Away from the tatami, Huizinga has remained active in sport and public life. He serves as President of the Survival Federation and works as an ambassador for the IJF Academy. He also represented the Netherlands as Chef de Mission at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.
Known for his love of fishing and outdoor survival, Huizinga continues to inspire young athletes long after his competitive career ended.
