Fallen star: Wang Ki-Chun to be released
Former South Korean judoka Wang Ki-Chun, once one of the brightest stars in the sport, is set to be released after serving a six-year prison sentence for serious criminal offences.
Wang, now 38, was sentenced in 2021 after being found guilty of sexually assaulting underage students who trained at his own judo club. The case shocked the judo world, given his status as an Olympic medallist and former world champion. According to court findings, the victims, aged 16 and 17 at the time, were in a vulnerable position, and Wang abused his role as a coach.
During the trial, Wang claimed the encounters were consensual, but the court firmly rejected that argument. Judges ruled that he had taken advantage of his authority and repeatedly violated the victims’ rights. Both the appeal court and the Supreme Court upheld the original six-year sentence.
Wang was arrested in May 2020 and is expected to be released in May 2026 after completing his full term.
Before the scandal, Wang Ki-Chun had an outstanding judo career. He won Olympic silver at the 2008 Beijing Games and became world champion in 2007 in Rio de Janeiro. Known for his explosive seoi-nage and strong groundwork, he was considered one of the top fighters of his generation, with victories at major events including the Tournoi de Paris.
Following his conviction, Wang was expelled from the Korea Judo Association. His dan ranks were revoked and he lost all rights to athlete pension benefits.
