Pawel Nastula
Paweł Nastula stands among Poland’s greatest judoka, a dominant force in the mid-1990s whose consistency and technical authority defined an era. Competing in the U95kg division, he built his reputation on relentless pressure, strong gripping and powerful ashi-waza that overwhelmed opponents.
His crowning achievement came at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, where he captured gold and delivered one of Poland’s most memorable sporting triumphs. A year later he confirmed his supremacy by winning the World Championship title in 1997. Across his career he collected three World Championship medals, demonstrating his sustained excellence on the global stage.
Nastula also ruled Europe during his peak years, becoming European Champion three consecutive times in 1994, 1995 and 1996. His dominance extended to the prestigious Tournoi de Paris, which he won in 1995 and 1996, further cementing his reputation as one of the most complete judoka of his generation.
After retiring from elite judo, Nastula sought new challenges in mixed martial arts, bringing his grappling pedigree into a different combat arena. Despite that transition, he has remained closely connected to judo in Poland, working with young athletes and contributing to the development of future talent.
