Rafaela Silva

Rafaela Silva

Rafaela Silva reinvented herself. She was born and raised in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, she rose from modest beginnings to become one of Brazil’s greatest judoka.

Her defining moment came at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where she captured gold on home soil and fulfilled a dream that resonated far beyond sport. Three years earlier she had already become World Champion in Rio in 2013, adding to her World silver medal from 2011 and bronze at the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo’s Budokan. As a junior she had signalled her potential by winning the World Junior title in 2008.

Silva has been a constant force on the international circuit, collecting 15 World Cup victories across Grand Prix and Grand Slam events. In recent seasons she has continued to prove her longevity. She won the Grand Prix Portugal in 2022, took silver in 2023 and claimed gold at the Grand Slam in Antalya the same year. In 2024 she secured gold at the Pan American Championships in Rio, followed by bronze at the 2025 Grand Prix in Guadalajara and bronze at the 2025 Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi. In 2026 she added another highlight by winning the Grand Slam in Paris.

Still competing at the highest level, Rafaela Silva remains a symbol of Brazilian judo’s fighting spirit and belief that champions can emerge from anywhere.
