Sergey Novikov
Sergey Novikov was one of the Soviet Union’s leading heavyweights in the 1970s and a dominant presence on the international stage. Powerful, composed and tactically disciplined, he reached the pinnacle of the sport at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games, where he captured gold and secured his place in judo history.
Novikov had already established himself among the elite before his Olympic triumph. He won World Championship medals in 1973 and 1975, proving his consistency against the strongest opposition of the era. On the European stage he was particularly formidable, claiming continental titles in 1973, 1974 and 1976. Those victories underlined his status as one of the most reliable heavyweights in Europe during that period.
Four years after his Olympic gold, Novikov returned to the Games in Moscow in 1980. Although he did not reach the podium, finishing fifth, his longevity at the highest level demonstrated both resilience and competitive quality.
Sergey Novikov’s career reflects the strength of Soviet judo in the 1970s, built on discipline and physical authority. Olympic champion, multiple European gold medallist and world podium finisher, he remains one of the notable figures of his generation. He passed away in 2021.
