Stéphane Traineau
Stéphane Traineau was one of France’s most respected heavyweights of the 1990s, combining power with tactical intelligence throughout a long and successful career. Competing at the highest level for more than a decade, he secured Olympic bronze medals at the Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Games, confirming his consistency on the biggest stage.
His greatest individual triumph came at the 1991 World Championships, where he claimed the world title and established himself among the elite of his generation. On the continental circuit he was equally impressive, becoming four-time European Champion between 1990 and 1999 and collecting numerous additional podium finishes.
After retiring from competition, Traineau successfully transitioned into leadership roles. He served as director of the French national judo teams before expanding his international influence. From 2022 he worked with the Kazakh national team, guiding their preparation towards the Paris Olympic Games. In 2025 he took on a new challenge as technical director of the Chinese Judo Federation, continuing to shape elite programmes at the highest level.
Alongside his sporting achievements, Traineau also built a successful career in business, demonstrating the same discipline and vision that marked his time on the tatami.
