David Khakhaleishvili: Georgia’s Olympic pioneer

David Khakhaleishvili will always be remembered as one of the great pioneers of Georgian judo. The powerful heavyweight made history by winning Olympic gold at the 1992 Barcelona Games, competing for the Unified Team (CIS) during a period of political transition following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Khakhaleishvili’s Olympic triumph marked the peak of a remarkable career in which he established himself among the best heavyweights in the world. Known for his strength, composure and technical ability, he was a difficult opponent for anyone on the international circuit.

Beyond his Olympic success, Khakhaleishvili also collected four medals at the World Championships, proving his consistency at the highest level. In Europe he was equally dominant, claiming three European titles, including two victories in 1993 and another in 1996. Earlier in his career he also captured gold at the prestigious German Open World Masters in 1991, a tournament known for its strong international fields.

Khakhaleishvili belonged to the first great generation of Georgian judoka who helped build the country’s reputation as a global judo powerhouse. His achievements inspired many young athletes in Georgia to follow the same path, contributing to the nation’s continued success in heavyweight judo.

The Georgian judo community was deeply saddened by his passing in January 2021.
