Aurelio Miguel
Aurélio Miguel is one of the great pioneers of Brazilian judo and the nation’s first ever Olympic champion. His victory at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games marked a historic moment for Brazil, placing the country firmly on the international judo map. Eight years later he added Olympic bronze in Atlanta 1996, proving his longevity at the highest level.
Miguel had already established himself as a rising star when he became World Junior Champion in 1983. He later collected three World Championship medals, confirming his place among the world’s elite in his weight category. His international résumé was strengthened by victory at the World University Championships in 1984.
Across the Pan American region he was dominant for more than a decade, claiming continental titles in 1982, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1992, 1996 and 1997. He also triumphed at numerous major open tournaments including the German Open, Dutch Open, Austrian Open, Belgian Open, US Open and Hungarian Open. In 1988 he reached the final of the prestigious Tournoi de Paris.
Aurélio Miguel’s Olympic breakthrough opened the door for future generations of Brazilian champions. His legacy is not only measured in medals but in the path he created for Brazilian judo on the global stage.
