Dietmar Lorenz
Dietmar Lorenz occupies a special place in judo history as the first German judoka to win Olympic gold. Representing East Germany, he reached the pinnacle of the sport at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, where he captured the gold medal in the open category and added bronze in the U95kg division.
Lorenz’s Olympic journey had begun four years earlier in Montreal in 1976. Still developing at the highest level, he finished fifth in the light heavyweight category, an experience that left a deep impression. The Olympics, he would later say, were always the greatest stage and the most powerful motivation of his career. In Moscow, that belief turned into reality. After securing bronze in U95kg, he produced a remarkable run in the open category to claim the ultimate prize.
Away from the Olympic Games, Lorenz was a dominant force in Europe throughout the second half of the 1970s. He won four consecutive European titles from 1975 to 1978, confirming his status as one of the continent’s leading heavyweights. He also reached the podium twice at World Cup level with third-place finishes.
At club level, Lorenz enjoyed success with SC Dynamo Hoppegarten, winning the European Cup in 1977 and helping establish the club as a powerhouse of East German judo.
Dietmar Lorenz’s legacy is defined not only by medals but by his historic Olympic triumph, a moment that reshaped German judo and secured his place among the sport’s great champions. He passed away in 2021.
