Ingrid Berghmans

Ingrid Berghmans

Ingrid Berghmans is widely regarded as the most successful judoka in Belgian history and one of the greatest female athletes the sport has ever produced. During the 1980s she dominated international women’s judo and helped establish Belgium as a powerhouse in the discipline.

Berghmans captured an extraordinary six world titles between 1980 and 1986. Her ability to maintain such dominance over several years placed her firmly among the legends of the sport. At a time when women’s judo was still developing internationally, she became one of its most recognisable stars.

Her greatest Olympic moment came at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul where she won the gold medal. The victory confirmed her status as the leading judoka of her generation and one of the pioneers of women’s judo on the Olympic stage.

Berghmans was equally dominant in Europe. She secured seven European Championship titles between 1983 and 1989, consistently proving her superiority across the continent.

Beyond the medals, Berghmans played an important role in inspiring a strong Belgian judo tradition. Her achievements paved the way for later champions and helped establish Belgium as a respected nation in international judo.

In recognition of her remarkable career and her influence on the sport, Berghmans was inducted into the International Judo Federation Hall of Fame. Today she remains one of the most celebrated figures in the history of judo.
