Jean-Luc Rougé
Jean-Luc Rougé was one of the trailblazers of French judo and a central figure in the sport’s rise in Europe during the 1970s. Competing in the U93kg category, he combined strength, intelligence and technical precision to establish himself among the world’s elite.
His greatest sporting achievement came in 1975 when he became World Champion, a historic moment for French judo. He later added silver and bronze medals at the 1979 World Championships, bringing his total world tally to three medals. On the continental stage, Rougé was even more dominant, capturing four European titles between 1973 and 1980. He also enjoyed repeated success at the prestigious Tournoi de Paris, winning the event three times, and contributed to European team gold with France.
After retiring from competition, Rougé moved seamlessly into sports administration. He became President of the French Judo Federation (FFJDA), later serving as Vice President of the European Judo Union and General Secretary of the International Judo Federation. His influence extended far beyond the tatami.
On 5 October 2017, he received the Insignes de Commandeur de la Légion d’Honneur from French President François Hollande, one of France’s highest distinctions, recognising his lifelong contribution to sport. He was awarded the 10th Dan Grade. The highest grade in the world.
