Legna Verdecia

Verdecia had already established herself as a global force before her Olympic triumph. In 1993 she became world champion in Hamilton, announcing Cuba as a serious power in women’s judo. Her success continued across the Pan American region where she dominated for years and collected seven continental titles.

She was equally dangerous on the international circuit. The prestigious Tournoi de Paris proved a favourite hunting ground where she took gold three times in 1994, 1998 and 1999. In addition she built an impressive record at the German Open World Masters, winning the tournament five times and confirming her reputation as one of the most reliable competitors of her era.

With a world title, Olympic medals and long-term dominance in the Americas, Verdecia helped shape the golden age of Cuban women’s judo and remains one of the sport’s most respected champions.
