Noriko Anno

Noriko Anno

Noriko Anno was one of Japan’s most dominant athletes in the U78kg division at the turn of the century. Powerful, technically refined and mentally composed, she built an extraordinary record that placed her among the all-time greats of women’s judo.

Anno became World Champion four times, winning the titles in 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2003. Her ability to remain at the top across multiple cycles underlined her consistency and competitive maturity. Although she experienced defeat in a world final during her career, she repeatedly returned stronger, reinforcing her status as the leading judoka in her category.

Her crowning moment came at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, where she captured the gold medal in the U78kg division. That Olympic title completed her collection and confirmed her legacy on the biggest stage in sport.

Domestically, Anno was equally impressive. She claimed seven Japanese national titles, competing in one of the toughest national systems in the world. A product of Meiji University, she developed within Japan’s renowned university structure before translating that success internationally.

Anno also excelled on the international circuit, winning the Tournoi de Paris in 1995 and 1997 and taking the German Open World Masters title in 1999.
