Udo Quellmalz
Udo Quellmalz was one of Germany’s most successful judoka of the 1990s, known for his tactical intelligence and consistency at the highest level. Competing in the U65kg division, he built a career filled with major titles and podium finishes.
Quellmalz first stepped onto the Olympic stage at the 1992 Barcelona Games, where he claimed bronze, announcing himself as a serious contender among the world’s best. His greatest Olympic moment followed four years later at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, where he captured the gold medal with a composed and controlled performance throughout the tournament.
On the world stage he was equally impressive. Quellmalz became World Champion twice, first in 1991 and again in 1995, and overall collected four World Championship medals during his career. In Europe he added three European Championship medals, confirming his long-term presence among the elite.
After retiring from competition, Quellmalz remained deeply involved in international judo. He worked as performance director for the British team, later coaching in Austria and Qatar, sharing his experience with new generations of athletes.
From 2018 onwards, he took on an important role within the IJF Referee Commission as a supervisor, contributing to the development of refereeing standards worldwide. Between 2022 and 2025, he also served as head coach of Judo Vlaanderen, continuing his influence on the sport beyond his competitive career.
