Avtandili Tchrikishvili: Georgia’s fearless trailblazer
Avtandili Tchrikishvili was one of the most exciting judoka of his generation, a fighter who embodied the fearless and attacking spirit of Georgian judo. The triple European champion and European Games winner became a symbol of Georgia’s rise as a dominant nation in world judo.
His greatest triumph came in 2014 when he captured the world title, confirming his place among the elite of the U81kg division. That same period saw him win the prestigious Paris Grand Slam in both 2014 and 2016, further demonstrating his ability to perform on the biggest stages. With Georgia he also celebrated multiple European and world team titles, strengthening the country’s proud judo tradition.
Tchrikishvili’s path into judo began with inspiration from his uncle, who introduced him to the sport. Like many Georgian champions, he also developed his physical strength and fighting instincts through Chidaoba, the traditional Georgian wrestling style that shaped his explosive and risk-taking approach.
Known affectionately as “Avto”, he became flag bearer for Georgia at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, a reflection of his status as one of the nation’s sporting icons. After setbacks, he showed his resilience by returning in 2018 with gold at the Grand Prix in Zagreb in the U90kg category, later adding podium finishes in Antalya and Abu Dhabi.
His rivalry with France’s Loïc Pietri produced some unforgettable contests, clashes between two world champions willing to risk everything for victory. Tchrikishvili’s dynamic throwing style and courage made him a true crowd favourite and a trailblazer who helped define modern Georgian judo.
